What is wax-carving?

Wax-carving is an ancient technique used to create a variety of items, including jewellery. After a piece has been carved in wax, it is then transformed into metal using a process called 'lost-wax' casting.
Carving wax is a really fun process, and especially great for those who are new to the world of jewellery. Because of the forgiving nature of wax, you're able to create some really adventurous and sculptural designs that you might not be able to achieve with traditional silversmithing techniques.

"So, what do I end up with?"

Fear not, you won't just end up with a lump of wax jewellery!
As if by magic, you will receive an exact replacement of your hand-carved design in the metal of your choice.
After the workshop, your wax design will be sent to a trusted casting company who will cast your item in metal. Once it has been sent back to me, I will clean and polish it up, ready to be collected or sent to you.

This will all happen within 3-4 weeks of your workshop date... Trust me, it's worth the wait!

Please Note:
The price of your ticket includes the cost of casting your piece into brass. If you would like your item to be cast in silver, gold, etc. there is an additional fee to pay based on the weight of your item.

Workshop Structure:
-
Introduction to wax carving, a brief history, and the different specialist waxes and tools you can use.

-
Demonstration and examples of different wax techniques that could be used, including carving, melting and moulding.
-
Draw, share and discuss design ideas, to work out how best to approach them.

-
Play and realise your designs.
What to bring:
-
A couple of ideas! Bonnie will provide some sources of inspiration to help with ideas, although strongly recommends that you come to the workshop with an idea or two to play with. Ideas generally tend to change and progress naturally as you create your piece in 3D, but having a starting point will save you as much time for making as possible.

-
Reading glasses (if you need them). You will be working at quite a detailed and small scale, so the clearer you can see, the better!

-
Clothes that you don't mind getting melted wax on. It's a pretty clean activity but things can always go wrong, especially when you're learning.
